Trowbridge Symphony Orchestra
Another Fine Performance
Trowbridge Symphony Orchestra's Spring Concert, conducted by Gareth Harris, took place in the Bradford on Avon Music Centre on Sat. 19th March. It opened with a stirring performance of Mendelssohns overture "Ruy Blas". From the majestic pounding chords to the allegro in happier mood, and the final crescendo, the orchestra played with great gusto.

This was followed by an exquisite performance of Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola. The soloists - Daphne Moody and Moira Alabaster are experienced chamber music players and their performance reflected exceptional musical rapport. The accompaniment consisting of small string orchestra with two horns and two oboes supported the players sympathetically. The audience was captivated by this beautiful performance and showed its appreciation by prolonged applause.

The second half of the programme was devoted to Symphony No 2 by Sibelius. In this mammoth work the orchestra was helped by an excellent augmented brass section and a competent young timpanist. The first movement began with short declamatory statenent of themes which were gradually blended to become a whole in Sibelius' unique style. The ochestra captured the moods - sometimes brooding, sometimes exciting - with impressive skill.

The slow movement was introduced by the cellos and basses playing piannissimo pizzicato until the bassoons entered with their haunting tune, beautifully executed. The abrupt changes of mood demanded strong overall management.

The third movement, a scherzo, was played at great speed and gave each player in the woodwind section ample oppurtunity to shine. It led straight into the exciting fourth movement with its huge surges of emotion. The symphony demands tremendous stamina in the players and the orchestra stood up to this very well, reserving its full force for the triumphant ending.
